OUR PROGRAMS

The Thirupuvanam Foundation is a NGO in Bangalore, India. Yeoman services were started as early as 1995 to support a one room school with 20 students. As the need for support increased a trust was established and the Thirupuvanam Foundation as an official NGO came into existence in 2002-2003.

Today the foundation is proud to have helped finance the construction of a multi-storied school and supports the education of over 300 students every year from the neighbourhood. The Foundation assists in educating & uplifting hundreds of impoverished children through the successful implementation of diverse programs.

SCHOOL SUPPORT AND MID-DAY MEALS

The major project and focus of the activities of the Thirupuvanam foundation lie in providing better standards of education for children from poor families at the higher primary school level, which covers the first seven years of school education in India. The “school support” project is the pivotal point of our thrust and objectives.

  • Regular food motivates parents to send their children to primary school.
  • The foundation provides warm midday meals for around 300 school students daily.
  • Good nutritional value and a balanced diet are offered.
  • Additional school teachers hired and financed by the foundation contribute to a better student-teacher ratio & enhance the quality of education.
  • The foundation provides an English language teacher, a teacher for the primary classes, a physical trainer and a teacher for computer education.
  • English introduced in the primary school provides a good stepping stone for improved prospects for students in a later phase in life.
  • Besides this, physical training and discipline is imparted for all children at least twice a week.
  • Past twenty-three years we are providing mid-day meals at an average of 270 Students under mid-day meal. So far around 6000 students, we provided mid-day meals.

    INFRASTRUCTURE  SUPPORT

    • The foundation supports diverse one time infrastructure projects to improve the standard of the GTHPS School for the students.
    • Sheds converted into class rooms to teach children
    • The foundation has set up a water filter to provide clean water to the school children. This was funded by a corporate donor.
    • The foundation has redone the bathrooms and toilets to ensure decent hygienic standards.
    • The foundation built a kitchen in 2014 to improve the food preparation facilities for the school children.
    • The foundation partially financed the construction of 8 school rooms.
    • The foundation fixed entire roof leakage issues at the GTHPS School.
    • Hanging flower pots placed inside the School premises to make the environment better.
    • Educational pictures drawn on the wall of GTHPS premises to add knowledge and ambience better for the students.
    • Rain Water Harvesting work done at BEO office in supporting them for channelizing rain water to avoid stagnancy in their office premises.

      SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM 

      The Scholarship program was introduced six years back. It was initiated to support affordable English medium secondary school education. It was later extended to include college education as well. This scheme is a very effective program that has helped uplift these children, boost their self confidence and improve their future prospects.

      • The foundation recognizes the importance of a good secondary school education built on the solid work done in the field of primary education.
      • Scholarships encourage children to continue education at the secondary school level.
      • The foundation encourages applications for scholarships from the 8th Standard onwards.
      • We encourage students to pursue college education.
      • We encourage 2 to 4 years vocational training courses too and provide financial support.
      • Scholarships are need based awards, only to children from low income families.
      • Proof of completion of the earlier class is mandatory.
      • As per this scheme, the foundation supports children with a fixed amount per child per year. The amount is paid directly to the school /institution at which the student is registered.

      Outcome

      • The response has been extremely positive.
      • In the first year about 30 children received scholarships. The scope of the program has been gradually extended due to the interest in and positive response to this scheme
      • Awarded a scholarship in 2017-18 for 533 students, in 2018-19 for 592 students and in 2019-20 for 425 students.
      • We have given over 3,000 scholarships during the last 6 years.
      • For a small NGO, this has meant a considerable organizational task especially since the scholarship recipients attend different institutions.

      Expenses

      • This project is funded wholly by the foundation.
      • About 19% of the foundation’s funds are allocated to this scholarship program.
      • The importance of education for the foundation is clearly documented here.
      • We spend up to 1,000 INR per year for one school student, 2,000 INR per year for one college student and 3,000 INR per year for one vocational student. Merit and Physically challenged students were awarded 5,000 INR per year.

      EASY ENGLISH PROGRAM

          • We had tie up with Akshara Foundation, Bangalore for making English to understand by the students easy and more comfortable.
          • Program implemented for the students from 1st standard to 3rd standard students and soon will extend the program for other standard also.
          • Now their communication is well developed comparing to previous as we are using Tab with Application for teaching.
          • So they are very much easing to learn quick and strong enough to remember

      MEDICAL SUPPORT

      • We finance the medication for two children from underprivileged backgrounds with cystic fibrosis. Medical treatment costs are unaffordable for their parents.
      • We are taking care of the medical attention for the RBC kids.
      • In 2013 hepatitis vaccines were given for over 300 children from the GTHPS School as also for 80 ex-students now in secondary school. This has been our effort to ensure that the children’s health is fortified.
      • Apart we are carrying out other medical camp (eye, dental, general etc.,) regularly.
      • The foundation provides free health insurance for its entire staff.
      • The foundation spends about 3% of its funds for medical support.

            MICRO FINANCE

                • Micro finance is a field in which some preliminary work is being done. We have a loan scheme for our employees only.
                • Foundation employees in urgent financial need are given interest free loans for durations of up to one year.
                • The scheme has helped uplift the families of the employees, reduce their dependence on money lenders & thereby avoid exorbitant interest rates.
                • At present just about 8% of the funds of the foundation are being used to finance this project.

            RBC PROGRAM (Residential Bridge Course)

            We care and provide for around 30 under-privileged children every year

            • Hostel accommodation (a home away from home) with a warden and a helper.
            • Meals in the morning & evening.
            • The program accommodates orphans and children of migrant workers and provides them access to education.
            • They get tuition in the evening together with life skills like Karate & Yoga.
            • The program was initiated by the state government in part fulfillment of its obligations to the millennium development goals
            • The children are housed in a provisory dormitory with all amenities on the school premises.
            • A daily routine and the fundamentals of hygiene are imbibed. They get regular nutritious meals, care and attention.
            • Every year we celebrate Diwali with this RBC kids.
            • Past 12 years we are running the program and around 425 students were benefitted by this program who are right now in well to do position as Nurse, police officials, IT sector, Corporate etc.,

            OTHER SERVICES

            • Yearly once we will conduct Alumni meet where old students of GTHPS gathered and share their experience.
            • We honour the teachers of GTHPS every year on Teacher’s Day.
            • The foundation has funded school bags, Sketch, Pen, Pencil etc., for all School children.
            • We organize Sports Day every year and distribute prizes to the students and Teachers of GTHPS.
            • We organize farewell for 7 th students and motivate them to continue their next level in other School where we support them with admission and tuition fees also.
            • We arrange for excursion every year for GTHPS students.
